Nutrient requirements of beef cows change frequently during the course of a year, depending on whether cows are bred or lactating. In addition, forage quality changes during the year. Supplemental feed needs are determined by the combination of cow requirements and forage quality. The basic rule is to feed to condition. The goal is to have cows in good condition at calving time. Creep Feeding can be very effective way to increase calf-weaning weights. In addition, creep feeding will reduce the nutritional demands on the cow, helping to keep the cow in good condition for the next breeding. Creep feeding is especially beneficial when:

• You want to maximize weaning weight
• Pasture supply or quality is low
• Cow condition is poor or marginal
• Calves are nursing young, 2 to 3 year-old cows
