Question and Answers
ROC™ is a new technology that takes the advantages of dry supplements, liquid supplements, and mineral supplements and combines them into one package. It eliminates the need for carrier ingredients in dry and liquid supplements, and corrects product consistency and handling problems that are prevalent with loose meals.
Meal supplements have a problem with ingredient separation from the time they are manufactured to the time they are delivered and fed, which leads to less consistent rations being fed. Meals also have more shrink problems, and do not handle as well as pelleted feeds. ROC™ is a solution to all of these problems.
Although the cost per ton of ROC™ is higher than traditional supplement, total supplement costs for the customer will decrease due to lower supplement inclusion rates.
What type of rations will ROC™ fit?
ROC™ is a natural fit for rations that do not need supplemental natural protein, such as rations containing high-protein byproducts.
No. If rations require significant levels of supplemental natural protein, ROC™ is probably not a fit. Also, the feedyard must be able to batch and mix relatively low inclusion rate supplements.
What are the handling characteristics of such a high urea product?
Even though urea levels can be high (up to 35%), the lack of moisture in the product allows it to handle very similarly to a traditional low urea supplement.
How do we decide who ROC™ is for?
MAX is the best tool for making this evaluation. At a minimum, the customer needs to be feeding ration ingredients that provide most, if not all, of the required natural protein.
We will provide formulation guidelines to create the ROC™ nutrient profiles. However, district management will have to have control of approximately 15% of the formula.
What are the features, benefits, and results from feeding ROC™?
FEATURES and BENEFITS
RESULTS
What makes ROC™ stick together into a pellet?
Our ROC™ Technology Premix with S3 is the key to being able to pellet high-urea, low-carrier minerals.
Our ROC™ Technology Premix with S3 that we use to manufacture the product causes the feed to turn green.
What is in ROC™ Technology Premix with S3?
The ROC™ Technology Premix with S3 is a trade secret that we cannot disclose. However, it is a safe feed ingredient that is recognized by AAFCO.
Does the ROC™ Technology Premix with S3 have any anti-nutritional concerns?
No.
Can additives such as drugs and vitamins be used in ROC™?
Yes. Our tests would indicate that there are no adverse affects on drugs or vitamins that are added to ROC™ formulations.
What pellet quality expectations can we expect (hardness, fines, etc)?
Our experience indicates that ROC™ has similar pellet quality as traditional dry supplement pellets.
How accurately can a feedlot batch and mix such a low inclusion product?
Although ROC™ can reduce batch time, accuracy should remain similar to what you have today. Batching accuracy with ROC™ is primarily determined by your system.
Will feedyard mills be able to handle ROC™ (receiving pits, legs, bins, etc)?
Some will, some won’t. Bulk density of the ROC™ ranges from 50-65 lbs/cu ft, depending upon the formula. Traditional supplement pellets average 40-45 lbs/cu ft.
Does ROC™ have applicability in the dairy market?
We think so. A significant amount of loose minerals and liquid supplements are fed in dairy rations, and the advantages of ROC™ over loose meals and liquids in these rations should be consistent with the advantages seen in feedlots.
Today, ROC™ is only available bulk. As we certify plants with bagging lines, this could change.
Is ROC™ available from all Cargill Animal Nutrition plants?
No. Plants must undergo a certification process before they will be able to manufacture and sell ROC™.
